It begins with Ernst Goethig, a.k.a. King Tiger, whose symbol reflects the nickname he earned in cadet school. He is the son of one of the kings who submitted to the Interstellar Council after the Retreat. The Warbird is the symbol of the current High Councilor Konstant Thuro; but also of the Old Vinjin Empire, who abandoned the Outer Reaches—or what is now Known Space—across the Retreat due to pressure from an unknown enemy.

The others will remain a mystery for now.

Below is a system map created in Blender. This makes locations in the story much easier to visualize, as we can rotate the map and manipulate camera angles. Systems are represented by planets, each colored by the main habitable world’s habitat: sandy, rocky, icy, water, verdant, volcanic, or a gas giant. I will eventually expand it to include the Retreat and beyond. The background is a NASA nebula photo mapped to the inside of the visual sphere in Blender.
