    ¡Viva España!

    [Nikon D5300]

Summer trip to Spain in 2023. Barcelona, Girona, Zaragosa, León, Burgos, Gitaria, San Sebastian. Catalonia, Aragon, Navarre, Castile y León, La Rioja, and Basque Country.

Augustus conquered Zaragosa and, having stepped into it, it was officially his. This was very close to an old commandery of the Knights of St. John.

You can see the blocky old construction at bottom left, then the Muslim additions to the right, then the Baroque on the uppoer left.
This may be my favorite panoramic cathedral shot.
This winery had a little museum down in the cellar, alongside the aging wines in little locked alcoves.

This guy strolled by in his bath robe as we were looking for our room.
Marques de Riscal is made of giant metal ribbons.

La Rioja province was literally nothing but grapes. Everyone makes wine or grows grapes or packages wine or transports wine or...or...Wine, it's what's for dinner.
Next we traveled to Marques de Riscal. On the way we learned Spain has over 21,000 windmills.

A remnant of the old owners.
These two were used to demonstrate how aging will change the flavor of the wine. They were five years apart, and we could definitely appreciate the difference.
Another tank top in the dark.
On to Amaren Winery. Wine is aged in concrete tanks these days. This is the top of a giant one in a much more modern winery.
When they bought the original vineyard, they catalogued all the varietals they found on the property. There were 160, most without enough grapes to make much of anything. These are the wines they were able to create with those minimal harvests.
They had a rose hanging out, all alone in a corner. It was almost a wallflower.
Traditional oak bin top; in the background are specially shaped tanks (supposed to affect the flavor) made of French wine concrete called Concrete X. I told them about Jack Daniels playing Metallica to their whiskey, and she laughed like that was silly. But Concrete X was not. I laughed, too.
Inside the tank, the wood is stained purple.
The guys in the background are pumping wine out of the barrels for bottling.
A tank, still in use, with the access door still showing the old owners' design.
